Gregory H. “Greg” Laing
WEST NEWBURY: Gregory H. “Greg” Laing, 60, Curator at the
Haverhill Public Library, died Sunday at Anna Jaques Hospital following
a long illness. Born in Haverhill February 20, 1947, Greg was the son
of Donald K. Laing and the late Constance “Connie” (Holt)
Laing.
Greg graduated from Pentucket High School in 1965 and continued his education
at Boston University. His long and eventful career with the Haverhill
Public Library began thirty-three years ago during which time he held
various positions until promoted to Curator of the Special Collections
which he held to the present. In that capacity his assistance was invaluable
to those wishing to research the history of Haverhill, local buildings
or family genealogy. His interest in history and antiques was enhanced
by his memberships in the Haverhill, West Newbury, Portsmouth, NH Historical
Society, and the Historical Society of Old Newbury where he was a Board
member and Past President. Greg’s true passion was traveling. Over
the years he traveled extensively to Goa, India and throughout most of
the Near East. His journeys included Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq,
and to England where he lived for several years. When in West Newbury
he enjoyed gardening at his home.
Beside his father, Greg is survived by his brothers Geoffrey C. Laing
of Plaistow, NH, G. Scott Laing and his wife Karen of Newton, NH; sister
Nancy E. Laing of Plaistow, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service at Dole, Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main
Street, Haverhill will be private, and there will be no calling hours.
Interment will be at (?) Cemetery. Details of a future memorial service
will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be
made to the Historical Society of Old Newbury, 98 High Street, Newburyport,
