Wallace G. “Wally” Upson
HAVERHILL: Wallace G. “Wally” Upson, 78, a resident of The
Oxford for the past two years, died Friday August 17th at the Beth Israel
Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Born in Haverhill September 7, 1928 he was
the beloved son of the late Wallace C. and Bertha (Colby) Upson. Mr. Upson
was a graduate of Haverhill High School class of 1948. During the Korean
Conflict he served in the U.S. Army with the 320th General Hospital before
his discharge in 1952 with the rank of corporal.
Upon his return from the military he worked and ran several restaurants
in the area including the Bradford Diner where Heavenly Donuts now stands.
In partnership with Norman Marcotte they worked side by side for several
years at Norman’s Restaurant in Lafayette Square. He then went on
to open Wally’s Place in the Hoyt’s Plaza (now Shaw’s
Plaza) in Plaistow, NH. Following a brief retirement Wally then opened
Jan & Wally’s Place in Groveland Square. An avid golfer he was
a member of Crystal Springs Golf Club for many years, and was a member
of AMVETS Post #147.
Beloved husband of the late Janice C. (Jones) Upson, he is survived by
his three daughters and their husbands, Carol & Arthur LaPierre of
Bradford, Catherine & Jack Collins of Jonesport, ME, Cindy & Gregg
Bouchard; his loving sister Barbara Dondero of Bradford; granddaughter
Michelle Nelson and her husband Kenneth; grandson Brian LaPierre; his
two beautiful great granddaughters Abigail and Isabelle Nelson, and several
nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral Wednesday 10:00 a.m. at Dole,
Childs & Shaw Funeral Home, 148 Main Street, Haverhill. Calling hours
Tuesday 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made
to the Oxford Activity Fund, 689 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
